Five Fun Facts about Yeast Infections

Want to know more about yeast infections? Here are five fun facts that you may not have known before!

Let's face it, ladies. No one likes talking about yeast infections. They're uncomfortable, they're itchy, messy. But the fact of the matter is that nearly every woman will experience at least one in her lifetime. So in the interest of making the best of a not-so-great situation, here are five fun facts about yeast infections that you can share with your friends the next time you find yourselves discussing this particular topic.

1. The first recorded yeast infection occurred in 800 B.C.E. when Egyptian doctors prescribed a mix of honey and sourdough to treat "an looseiness of the womb." Eeks!

2. In 1853, a doctor named James Paget first described the symptoms of what we now know as a yeast infection.

3. The vast majority of yeast infections are caused by a type of fungus called Candida albicans. However, there are more than 20 different types of Candida fungi that can cause an infection.

4. Some studies have indicated that eating yogurt with live cultures or taking a supplement of Lactobacillus acidophilus can help to prevent yeast infections.

The research is not definitive, but it's worth a try!

5. Wearing cotton underwear and avoiding tight pants or pantyhose can help keep things cool and dry down there, which makes it less hospitable for yeast.

Also, be sure to change out of wet swimsuits or damp workout clothes immediately - yeast love nothing more than a warm, moist environment.

Yeast infections may not be pleasant, but it's important to remember that almost every woman will experience at least one at some point in her life. So the next time you find yourself with a case of the itchies, don't be afraid to ask your friends for advice—you may be surprised at how much they know about this common condition!

If you're unsure whether or not you have one, always see your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment options, as some home remedies could actually make your symptoms worse..

“Health isn’t about being “perfect” with food or exercise or herbs. Health is about balancing those things with your desires. It’s about nourishing your spirit as well as your body.” - Golda Poretsky
